AI and data roles are now core GCC mandates, not experiments
A few years ago, AI and advanced data roles inside a GCC were often exploratory — a small team validating whether a use case was viable. That has changed. GCCs are increasingly the team building and operating production AI and data systems for the wider organization, which means hiring demand has shifted from a handful of research-oriented data scientists to a broader mix: data engineers, MLOps engineers, and applied AI engineers who can take a model from prototype to a monitored production system.

GCCs that insist on matching candidates to an exact job title from the parent organization's home-market taxonomy are shrinking their own candidate pool unnecessarily. A skills-based approach — screening for the underlying competencies a role actually requires, rather than a specific prior title — has become one of the more effective adjustments GCCs are making to hiring, particularly for AI, data, and platform roles where titles vary widely across the market.
Flexible engagement models are absorbing ramp-up pressure
Because GCC build-outs and Centre-of-Excellence launches are often tied to board-approved timelines, permanent hiring alone rarely moves fast enough to meet an aggressive ramp. Contract staffing and staff augmentation are increasingly used deliberately for the earliest phase of a new CoE, with a subset of those roles later converting to permanent headcount once the team's steady-state shape becomes clear.
