Hiring Kubernetes and Cloud-Native Talent in India
What separates genuine Kubernetes and cloud-native operating experience from surface familiarity, and how to screen for it.
Kubernetes has become close to a default expectation on cloud and platform engineering resumes, which makes it a poor differentiator on its own. Almost every candidate in this space will list it. The differentiator is whether that experience comes from operating a cluster under real production load, or from a course project and a handful of tutorials.
Here is what we look for when screening candidates for Kubernetes and broader cloud-native roles, and where this talent tends to concentrate in the Indian market.
Distinguish deployment familiarity from operational ownership
Deploying an application to an existing, well-maintained cluster is a fundamentally different skill from being accountable for that cluster's reliability — capacity planning, node scaling policy, upgrade strategy, and incident response when a workload misbehaves. Interview questions should probe specifically for the latter: has the candidate ever diagnosed a resource contention issue, handled a failed rolling upgrade, or debugged a networking problem between services in the mesh?
Test for cloud-native architecture judgment, not tool trivia
Rather than quizzing candidates on Kubernetes API object syntax, a stronger exercise presents a small, realistic service architecture and asks the candidate to identify scaling, resilience, or cost issues in it — for example, a missing readiness probe, an under-specified resource limit, or an anti-pattern in how services are exposed. This reveals whether a candidate understands cloud-native design principles or has only memorized commands.
Account for the broader cloud-native ecosystem, not Kubernetes alone
Genuine cloud-native experience usually extends beyond the orchestrator itself to service mesh, observability tooling, GitOps-based deployment pipelines, and increasingly, security scanning integrated into the deployment process. Candidates who can speak credibly across this broader ecosystem, rather than Kubernetes in isolation, are typically better prepared for the realities of a modern platform engineering role.
Where this talent concentrates in India
Deep, production-grade Kubernetes and cloud-native experience in India is concentrated among engineers who have worked at cloud-native product companies, larger GCCs running platform engineering functions, and organizations that migrated significant workloads to Kubernetes several years ago rather than recently. Sourcing strategies that specifically target these backgrounds tend to outperform broad job-board postings for this skill set.
Consider platform engineering titles, not just DevOps

Restricting a search to 'DevOps Engineer' job titles alone can unnecessarily narrow the candidate pool for what is functionally the same skill set.
