How demand and candidate depth differ across the three major cloud platforms, and what that means for a hiring search.
Cloud hiring demand doesn't distribute evenly across AWS, Azure, and GCP, and neither does the depth of the available candidate pool. Understanding these differences matters for setting realistic search timelines and sourcing strategy, since a role requiring niche GCP experience will follow a very different search than one requiring more broadly available AWS skills.
Here's how we see demand and candidate depth breaking down across the three major platforms.
Multi-cloud fluency is increasingly expected, not exceptional
A growing share of organizations run workloads across more than one cloud provider, whether by deliberate strategy or through acquisition and organic growth. This has shifted expectations: candidates with meaningful depth in one platform and working familiarity with a second are increasingly preferred over deep single-platform specialists, particularly for platform engineering and SRE roles that need to support a heterogeneous environment.
AWS: the broadest candidate pool, still the most requested
AWS remains the most commonly requested platform and has the deepest and most broadly available candidate pool in India, spanning everything from foundational infrastructure roles to advanced serverless and container-native architectures. This breadth of supply means AWS searches are typically the fastest to fill among the three, other than for the most specialized advanced roles.
Azure: strong demand from enterprise and GCC hiring specifically
Azure demand is disproportionately driven by enterprise organizations and GCCs, particularly those with a strong Microsoft ecosystem footprint already (Office 365, Dynamics, or existing Windows Server infrastructure). The candidate pool is somewhat smaller than AWS's but well-matched to this specific type of organization, and often includes engineers who came up through Microsoft-centric enterprise environments.
GCP: narrower pool, concentrated in data and AI-heavy organizations
GCP has a comparatively smaller footprint in the Indian market overall, but candidate depth is disproportionately concentrated in organizations working heavily with data and AI workloads, given GCP's strength in BigQuery and related data and ML tooling. Organizations building a GCP-centric data or AI platform should expect a narrower, more targeted search than for an equivalent AWS role.
Screen for platform depth, not resume-listed breadth
As with Kubernetes and the modern data stack, listing all three cloud platforms on a resume is common and a weak signal on its own. Screening should confirm which platform a candidate has operated at genuine depth — architecture decisions, cost optimization, incident response — versus which platforms they've merely touched, since the two experiences are not interchangeable despite similar surface-level tooling.
