Multi-cloud experience is easy to claim and hard to verify — here's how to screen for the judgment it actually requires.

Multi-cloud experience appears on a large share of cloud engineering resumes, but it means very different things depending on whether a candidate has genuinely architected systems that span multiple providers or simply worked at organizations that happened to use more than one cloud in separate, unrelated contexts.

Here's what we screen for to distinguish genuine multi-cloud architectural judgment from incidental exposure to more than one provider.

Ask why the organization chose multiple clouds in the first place

Genuine multi-cloud experience usually comes with a clear rationale a candidate can articulate — redundancy and disaster recovery requirements, cost arbitrage for specific workload types, avoiding vendor lock-in for a specific strategic reason, or inheriting multiple clouds through acquisition. A candidate who can't explain why their organization used more than one cloud, beyond 'we just did,' likely had incidental rather than deliberate multi-cloud exposure.

Probe for cross-cloud networking and identity management experience

The parts of multi-cloud architecture that are genuinely difficult — and that reveal real experience — are cross-cloud networking, unified identity and access management, and consistent security posture across providers with different native tooling. Candidates who have only deployed similar but entirely separate workloads on different clouds, without integrating them, have a materially different (and less complex) skill set than those who've had to make systems interoperate across providers.

Test judgment on when NOT to go multi-cloud

A useful interview question presents a scenario and asks whether multi-cloud makes sense for it. Multi-cloud architectures add real operational complexity and cost, and strong candidates can articulate when a single-cloud approach is the better choice — for example, for a smaller team without the operational maturity to manage the added complexity. Candidates who advocate for multi-cloud unconditionally often haven't had to live with its operational costs.

Assess tooling strategy for managing multiple providers consistently

Strong multi-cloud candidates typically have experience with infrastructure-as-code and orchestration approaches designed to abstract some of the differences between providers — rather than maintaining entirely separate, inconsistent tooling and processes per cloud. Screening for this reveals whether a candidate has thought systematically about multi-cloud operations or handled each cloud in isolation.

Weight this experience appropriately relative to the actual role

Not every cloud engineering role genuinely requires multi-cloud experience, and over-indexing on it for a role that will realistically operate on a single provider unnecessarily narrows the candidate pool. Reserve rigorous multi-cloud screening for roles where the organization's actual infrastructure genuinely spans multiple providers today or has a concrete near-term plan to.
